And potentially earn life-changing sums of money.
However, this ease of access creates a double-edged sword.
Because market-saturation, unrealistic expectations, and a lack of knowledge
But fear not.
Below I’ve listed my top 7 affiliate marketing tips for beginners to help you hit the ground running.
Affiliate Marketing Secrets – The 7 Pillars of Success
I struggled for years to make any money from affiliate marketing.
However, when success did come.
It was because I’d realised that the following 7 elements could make or break my affiliate business.
If you execute on these points from day one.
You’ll be WAY ahead of the curve.
1: Define the Problem Set That You’re Solving
If your affiliate business is to succeed.
It must solve a very specific problem or set of problems.
I personally believe that being able to clearly identify highly emotive issues that can be solved with monetised solutions is the single biggest key to your success.
Examples of emotive problems include:
- How to make money online;
- How to lose weight;
- How to find a partner.
These are all examples of ‘evergreen’ problems that continually bother people year-round.
To the extent where they will part with their money to solve these issues.
This contrasts with ‘hobby’ markets.
Where people typically don’t have the same burning pain driving them to take action.
(Unless you can really appeal to their egos and sell them on their ‘future, better self/status’).
Don’t worry about being too broad with your core problem at first.
Because nested inside the core problem is usually several niche problems.
The initial task is to make sure that you’re going after a high-traffic,
(Use Google Trends and Google AdWords to help you with this – also look for markets with lots of high-quality affiliate programmes).
You can then ‘niche down’ and focus on a specific issue.
This will allow you to uniquely serve a segment of a market that’s ultimately enduring at its core.
2: Identify Your Place in the Market
Now that you’ve got your problem-set clearly defined.
You need to figure out how your business will fit into the market.
And thus dictate how you will create value for your target audience(s).
A problem-set that fits into a single industry is in a niche market (‘vertical’).
For example I once created an online affiliate business in the ‘profitable betting’ niche.
The problem being solved was that of finding profitable betting systems.
Conversions were quite good because I was talking to a fairly clustered demographic.
So, all of the peripheral content that I created was to do with betting.
Such as staking plans, betting sites to use, and strategy advice.
This made it fairly simple to resonate with my audience and get sales.
Conversely, a problem-set that spans multiple niches ‘fits’ more of a ‘horizontal’ market.
For example, Online Income Solutions solves the problem of making money online.
However, this problem exists across multiple verticals.
Such as making money in affiliate marketing, matched betting, working from home, and many more.
This makes it much harder to create content that resonates with everyone that visits this site.
Start with a niche market if you’re new to affiliate marketing.
You’ll probably get a better conversion rate because your website and content will resonate well with your target audience.
Problem-sets that map across multiple niches
But most novices typically lack the experience to serve multiple demographics with their content out of the gate.
3: Know Your Main Traffic Source
Your affiliate business will die.
If you’re new to affiliate marketing your main traffic options are:
- Organic (Google, Bing, Yahoo);
- Social media (YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest);
- Paid (AdWords, Bing Ads).
There are also more advanced options such as solo ads, and ad-swaps with influencers in ‘shoulder-niches’.
Unless you know what you’re doing.
Buying traffic right off the bat usually doesn’t end well.
Going after free traffic from the search engines and social media channels is probably the best way to start.
Personally, I recommend hyper-focusing in one area.
Typically where you’ll be creating the bulk of your content.
So, if you’re going to monetise your blog posts – focus on organic search.
But if your content is video based – most of your traffic may end up coming from YouTube.
There’s also scope for channel cross-over as you progress.
4: Start Building an Audience ASAP
Making ‘drive-by’ sales from new visitors to your content is a tough way to make money.
But if you build an audience from day one.
You can potentially monetise each lead several times over.
Email is typically the most powerful way to do this.
But you can also soft-sell to your Facebook groups.
And even those who’ve opted into receive ‘push notifications’.
Start building an email list as soon as you can.
I’ve found that email courses work well as lead magnets.
Because you can create multiple points of contact with your audience to build trust over time.
But don’t sell right away.
Over-deliver on free content.
And then gradually phase in
5: Don’t Worry About the Competition
What’s the easiest way to beat your competition?
By ignoring them.
Instead, focus on YOUR target audience and what THEY want.
This will allow you to create more value for the people that will listen to you.
This is how you differentiate yourself in the market.
And not by having the latest ‘chatbot’.
Or a better looking website than your rivals.
6: Lose Your Ego
You’re not creating content for you.
You’re creating it for your audience.
What does your visitor want from a specific piece of content?
Put yourself in the shoes of your reader/viewer.
Figure out their intent.
Then create massive, relevant value.
And leave the self-indulgent waffle for the corporate stiffs
7: Hyper-Focus (Until It’s Time to Diversify)
Shiny object syndrome.
It’s one of the top reasons why novice affiliate marketers fail.
For example, if you’ve decided that creating SEO content is going to be your primary traffic acquisition strategy.
Just do that.
Rather than flip-flopping from one technique to the next on a whim.
Only switch strategies once the data/metrics tells you that it’s time to do so.
And once you’ve got something working.
THEN start to diversify in order to stabilise your business.
Affiliate marketing is typically a waiting game.
Which means that usually, not much happens for the first 6-12 months.
But after that, all of your hard work starts to pay off.
Usually at an exponential rate.
This is especially true if you’re blogging and getting your traffic from the search engines.
