Textbroker is a content mill that will pay you to be a freelance writer.

As far as these types of freelance writing marketplaces go, I think that Textbroker is actually one of the better options.

But the rate of pay is still quite low.

Read the full review to find out how to potentially increase your relative hourly rate with a few simple tricks.

Writing has allowed me to earn a living online (here’s how).

And if you’re a bit of a wordsmith yourself, then you might be wondering if Textbroker is a legit way to help you make money online from your writing skills.

Well, I’ve pretty much seen it all since I became interested in making money using the internet way back in 2007.

And that includes trying to type my way to profits using various freelance platforms and independent writing gigs.

So in this honest and real Textbroker review, I’ll be revealing if Textbroker is a scam or not.

Here’s what my research has uncovered.

What is Textbroker?

Textbroker is a marketplace that connects freelance writers with people who need content creating.

This is sometimes referred to as a ‘content mill’ – a term that often has negative connotations due to the typical low rates of pay given to the freelancers.

Founder, Jan Becker-Fochler, came up with the idea of Textbroker back in 2005 – with the platform launching in 2007.

Textbroker focuses on delivering SEO driven blog posts, product descriptions, and technical articles for their clients.

How Does Textbroker Work?

To begin working as a freelance writer with Textbroker – click the ‘sign up button’ in the website’s top menu navigation.

Select ‘I want to earn money as a writer’ to begin the author registration process.

The sign up form will ask for your personal information and allow you to select several areas of ‘expertise’ from a dropdown box.

The next step is to submit a writing sample.

Take your time with the sample – because it will be judged by the Textbroker team in order to give you your ‘author rating’.

Your author rating will determine how much you will get paid.

I believe the approval process can take up to 2 weeks.

Once approved, you can complete your author profile and start writing for cash.

Can Anyone Join?

When I checked the sign up form, Textbroker said that they are currently only accepting orders from the UK, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, South Africa, and the Republic of Ireland.

How Much Can You Get Paid?

The amount you’ll get paid is calculated based on your author rating and the number of words written.

Payments per word are as follows:

  • 2/5 stars = € 0.70 cents/word.
  • 3/5 stars = € 0.95 cents/word.
  • 4/5 stars = € 1.30 cents/word.
  • 5/5 stars = € 4.00 cents/word.

How Do You Get Paid?

Textbroker pay via PayPal.

The minimum cashout threshold is $10.

How Can You Improve Your Ratings?

The initial article that you submit is graded from 2-4 stars to determine your pay level.

After you have submitted your first 5 articles you’ll be up for review.

Your work will then be graded from 2-5 stars.

The editors will provide you with feedback so that you can improve your writing and increase your earning potential.

What Sort of Work is Available?

There are three types of work to choose from:

1: Open Order

Open Orders allow you to pick and choose the projects that you’d like to work on.

You’ll be paid relative to your quality level.

2: Direct Order

Direct Orders differ from Open Orders because they are issued exclusively to you.

As such, your price per word is NOT determined by your author rating and can instead be set by you.

2: Team Order

A Team Order allows you to work with a team of authors to create work around a specific topic.

The price per word is set by the client.

Is Textbroker a Scam or Legit?

In my opinion, Textbroker is a legitimate service and NOT a scam.

I say this because there is evidence of people getting paid to complete projects as advertised by Textbroker.

But there are a few things I think you should keep in mind before getting involved with Textbroker as a freelance writer.

I’ll discuss these with you in just a moment.

Textbroker Reviews

I had a look around online to see what other Textbroker users were saying about working for Textbroker as a freelance writer.

I’ve summarised the key points in the next two sections.

But if you’d like to continue your research alone, here are the resources I used:

  • Indeed – 3.7/5 stars (70 reviews).

Good Textbroker Reviews

Here’s some of the good points raised by Textbroker freelancers:

  • Flexible.
  • Regular work available.
  • Payouts are simple.
  • Good rates of pay.
  • Work from home.
  • Team orders pay better.

Textbroker Complaints

Here are some of the complaints made by freelance writers using the Textbroker platform:

  • Poor rates of pay.
  • Accounts closed for ‘false’ plagiarism.
  • Rating of at least ‘4 stars’ required to ‘make any money’.
  • Strong SEO/keyword knowledge required.
  • Article approval takes too long.
  • Too many revision requests from some clients.
  • Team orders come with ‘crazy’ instructions.
  • Poor treatment of freelancers by clients (‘rude’).

My Thoughts On Textbroker

Having had a look at Textbroker for myself, here’s what I think you need to consider before committing your time as a freelancer.

1: Work Smart (And Drop Your Ego)

I remember waaay back when I actually wanted to be a REAL writer.

I developed this really waffly sort of style because I wanted to impress people, because – let’s face it – us writers quite often have big egos that need satisfying.

Then I started writing for the web.

And my writing style has actually gotten WORSE.

But it makes me money.

Writing for content farms requires a similar line of thinking:

Do what makes you the MOST money with the LEAST amount of effort.

Writing for clients is all about meeting the order requirements WITHOUT burning yourself out.

So why leave your brain cells in tatters trying to create Shakespearean levels of content – when you can put in way less effort and still get paid?

And – as someone who has perfectionism infused into their very being – I can tell you that agonising over every detail isn’t required.

Instead, look for clients who repeatedly put out EASY orders and make a note of their ID.

For example, some folks will ask you to simply rewrite an existing article.

This is much easier than trying to come up with a new article on your own.

Also, sort the articles by highest price first and blast through them to increase your earnings.

This game is all about being efficient so that you can bump up your relative hourly rate.

2: It’s a Legit Way to Get Paid Online

One of the major upsides with Textbroker is that they WILL pay you.

This contrasts with many of the crappy freelance writing products that I’ve exposed on ClickBank.

Where you’ll first be asked to pay money just for the privilege of being redirected to gigs that you could find yourself online for free.

And there does appear to be a decent amount of work available.

Which can often be a problem when freelancing as a transcriptionist with the likes of TranscribeMe, Rev.com, and Transcription Express.

3: The Rate of Pay is Still Pretty Low

The rate of pay for this type of work is still pretty low.

So if you’re wanting to do this full-time, you’ll need to get good at prioritising the easy tasks over the more complex ones and not burning out.

You may even wish to stack Textbroker with other freelance writing resources so that you can focus on the best paying and/or easiest tasks that you can find over a cross section of platforms – to maximise your efforts and bump up your relative hourly rate.

I also know that some people do online surveys too to pull in a bit of extra money.

But to be honest, these pay even less.

So I would just focus on the ‘better’ ones like SwagBucks, 20 Cogs, My Money Pocket, and OhMyDosh.

4: Learn Basic SEO

Many clients will want you to know how to write articles that will rank in Google for specific keywords.

I learned how to do this with Wealthy Affiliate.

And it’s not as difficult as it sounds.

Just use the keyword in the heading, somewhere in the first paragraph (naturally) and in the meta title and description.

There’s absolutely NO need to repeat the keyword over and over again anymore (keyword stuffing) because Google actually ranks keyword stuffed articles lower.

Unique content is the key.

  • Legit way to make money online.
  • Low cashout threshold ($10).

  • The pay is still pretty low.
  • Easy to burn out.

Conclusion: One of the Better Content Mills

As far as content mills go – Textbroker is probably one of the better platforms out there.

Because there are people claiming that they have been able to make around $20 per hour with Textbroker.

However, this will require some experience and the ability to prioritise your time so that you’re getting the best hourly rate possible.

Who is Textbroker Best For?

If you’re trying to make a living from freelance writing…

Then I personally think that Textbroker is best suited to experienced freelance writers who know how to get the most out of their time – probably by ‘stacking’ it with other platforms to identify the projects with the best relatively hourly rate.

But if you’re a novice?

Then I would view Textbroker as a way to potentially make a bit of extra pocket money from your writing.

What’s the Alternative?

I’ll NEVER go back to freelance writing for clients.

Because I actually make more money writing for myself.

And if you click the button below I’ll reveal the ONE thing that allowed me to earn a full time income online from home just by writing.

(And it’s NOT blogging!).
